Paducah & Louisville Railway has reported to a federal agency that a broken rail caused the October 2012 derailment in southwestern Jefferson County.The findings will be used in a Federal Railroad Administration investigation into the derailment, which an agency spokesman says will be completed in the next few weeks.P&L spokeswoman Bonnie Hackbarth said the company is not commenting beyond the broken rail finding, whichThe Courier-Journal first reported. A preliminary reportdid not include a cause.A couple of the 12 derailed cars carried hazardous chemicals.Residents in the vicinity endured several days of shelter orders and evacuations, and two contract workers were injured in a fire during the clean-up. The two injured workers and several residents have filed lawsuits against P&L and others.Just after the derailment, a P&L executive told WFPL that the line where the derailment happened had been inspected just days before.
