  • KentuckyOne Health, the largest health system in the state, has dropped all contracts with Medicaid managed care organization Coventry Cares. Coventry Cares had terminated two of its contracts with KentuckyOne Health, including one with Our Lady of Peace, which provides specialized services for high risk patients in Louisville. Now, KentuckyOne spokesperson Barbara Mackovic says her organization is responding by halting all its contracts with the managed care organization. "KentuckyOne Leadership very strongly believes that Medicaid recipients in he Commonwealth should have access to quality health care via a comprehensive network of provider and community organizations," she said. The MCO has dealt with similar accusations from Appalachian Regional Healthcare, which also saw its contracts threatened after Coventry argued that unfair rules governing managed care in the state meant that it was required to cover more higher-cost patients. Coventry Cares is one four managed care organizations administering Medicaid in Kentucky. KentuckyOne says it will continue to honor commitments with the state's three other MCOs.
  • State officials are remembering Mike Haydon, Governor Steve Beshear's chief of staff, who died suddenly Sunday.A memorial service for Haydon will be held tomorrow at the state Capitol.Beshear said in a statement he and his wife are devastated by Haydon’s passing. The 62 year old Haydon had served in state and local government for over three decades in various capacities and earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle.Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson says Haydon was key link for state legislators."He was the go-to guy, you know, when they needed something done or they wanted to know how a project was moving forward. He was always there for Democrats, for Republicans, he was there for Kentucky," Abramson said."And that’s why it was just so shocking to hear he had this massive heart attack and we lost him."A memorial service for Mike Haydon will be held tomorrow at 3:30pm in the state Capitol Rotunda. Visitation begins at 2:30pm.Haydon's funeral is Friday in his native Springfield.

UK president Eli Capilouto has agreed to blog for the highly-trafficked news site about issues involving higher education. University spokesperson Jay Blanton says the site was interested in featuring new perspectives on how universities can adapt to tight budgets.
