Work is underway on the creation of a new venue for racing fans at Churchill Downs.Demolition has begun to make way for the $14.5 million Grandstand Terrace. It’s scheduled for completion in time for next year’s Kentucky Derby. The project will add 2,400 seats and more amenities to the grandstand at the head of the track’s homestretch that also overlooks the Kentucky Derby starting gate."One of the things we don’t have is a lot of landscaping, a lot of greenspace, so one of the parts of this project, called the rooftop garden, incorporated a lot of landscaping a lot of greenery," said Churchill Downs General Manager Ryan Jordan."That’s kind of a calming, soothing feel, so that people who are out here, if they want that picnic-like environment to come out for a regular day of races, this will be available."The project will also add more wagering windows, concessions and restrooms to the area, which had been used for maintenance and warehouse space.Jordan says pricing for the seating in the new venue is still being finalized but he doesn’t expect the project to impact concession costs.
