Some TARC Routes Spared From Cuts

The Transit Authority of River City’s Board of Directors has approved several service reductions that will take effect in August, but the cuts are not as steep as originally proposed.Under a plan approved by the board today, half of the cuts proposed two months ago will be spared, due to lower than estimated diesel fuel costs,  a boost in occupational tax revenue in May and in response to public input.  TARC gets much of its funding from the occupational tax.The plan calls for the elimination of five bus routes; three in southern Indiana, along with the Iroquois-Fairdale Express and the Deering Road Express.   Officials say TARC’s southern Indiana service is being restructured so the three routes being cut could become part of the new service. The service cuts will take effect August 12.   The board had previously approved  fare hikes to help offset a projected budget deficit.  They take effect July 1.
