Former Metropolitan Sewer Districtexecutive director Bud Schardein has officially retired, effective yesterday.Schardein spent 27 years with MSD, and was named executive director in 2002. He intended to stay in the position until at least January 2013, but his leadership of the agency came into question last year. After then-state auditor Crit Luallan releaseda report that highlighted numerous managerial and ethical problems at MSD, Mayor Greg Fischer announced that Schardein would retire earlier than planned.Fischer named Louisville Water Company President Greg Heitzman as interim executive director, and in December, said Schardein would serve as an advisor to Heitzman and retire in the spring.MSD spokesman Steve Tedder says Schardein has helped Heitzman with the transition, and the early retirement was Schardein’s decision.
