Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has released its 1000th Northern Bobwhite Quail. The birds have been hatched on site as part of the forest’s effort to reintroduce them. The Bobwhite's numbers are swelling again at the arboretum South of Louisville. Bernheim has been rebuilding habitat for the 5 to 6 ounce quails over the years. And last year, after successfully incubating eggs, began releasing birds into the forest’s natural areas. Their numbers have become increasingly threatened lately by the loss of habitat throughout their range in Eastern North America, though they are still a popular game bird in some areas.
