Miles Kane: “You get into your 30s and you stop trying to be someone you’re not”

Miles Kane

Miles Kane on Motown, Boxing, and Writing with Lana Del Rey

Miles Kane has always had an ear for reinvention, but Change the Show finds him fully embracing the soul and swagger of his musical roots. This time, the British rocker leans into his love for Motown, blending classic grooves with his signature sharp songwriting. “I wanted it to feel like an old-school soul record but still be me,” Kane says. “No overthinking, just instinct.”

The album’s standout moments include Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough, a fiery back-and-forth with Corinne Bailey Rae. “We’d known each other for years, but one night I texted her after hearing one of her tunes again,” Kane recalls. “Next thing you know, we’re sending each other songs, and she’s telling me she can’t stop singing this one.” It’s a proper duet in the old-school sense, with the two trading lines like a lost 60s classic.

Lyrically, Kane tackles themes of growth, change, and perspective. “You get into your 30s and you stop trying to be someone you’re not,” he says. “I wanted to write about that moment—when you start getting comfortable in your own skin.” Don’t Let It Get You Down embodies that philosophy, its whirlwind lyrics unfolding like a rapid-fire monologue. “It’s a storyboard for a movie,” Kane laughs. “Just trying to shake off the madness.”

Beyond music, Kane is juggling a clothing line and his love for boxing. “There’s something about the discipline of it,” he says. “The mindset, the energy—it’s not that different from being onstage. That walk to the ring? That’s a gig entrance.”

Kane’s collaborative streak extends beyond his solo work—most notably, a co-write on Lana Del Rey’s Dealer. “I love seeing other artists stretch into new spaces,” he says. “That’s what keeps it exciting.” And for fans of his many projects, there’s more to come—his upcoming tour setlist will dip into The Last Shadow Puppets catalog. “It’s all part of the same thing,” he says. “Just good songs, played loud.”
