The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting's R.G. Dunlop and 89.3 WFPL were honored today with a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for the "Man With Many Chances" series.
The Radio Television Digital News Association bestowed the award to Dunlop and WFPL in the radio investigative reporting category.
"The Murrow Awards honor journalism at its finest," Mike Cavender, Executive Director of RTDNA, said in a release posted to the group's website. "Local newsrooms serve their communities 365 days a year, and we're proud to recognize the great work they do."
Regional winners automatically advance to the national Edward R. Murrow Awards competition, which will be judged in May.
Dunlop's reporting late last year revealed flaws in the Indiana criminal justice system that allowed longtime felon Richard Hooten to commit crime after crime with little intervention. Eventually, Hooten killed 17-year-old Tara Rose Willenborg in Clarksville, a crime to which he recently pleaded guilty.
"All of us are extremely proud that R.G. has won this prestigious award," said Donovan Reynolds, president and general manager of Louisville Public Media, which operates 89.3 WFPL and KyCIR. "Given that this was his first radio production, the award is truly an extraordinary achievement."
The series, which was produced by KyCIR, 89.3 WFPL, and the News and Tribune newspaper, also garnered an honor in the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors awards contest.
